Teradek Vidiu-A Low Cost 1080P Streaming Unit

The team at Teradek are masters of video streaming and encoding but with their latest addition, the VidiU, they have produced what they describe as a consumer-level encoder. As you might expect though, coming from the people that brought you the BoltBond, and Cube, this is no kids toy and still has some pretty impressive features. Rather than being strictly consumer focused, it is perhaps aimed at the video shooter working with a smaller kit such as a HDMI equipped DSLR or camcorder who still needs a live streaming capability. The unit features an HDMI H.264 encoder that streams 1080p video in real time at up to 5Mbps over dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n MIMO WiFi, Ethernet, or via a 3G/4G USB cellular modemvidiu_app

The VidiU uses API level integration and Livestream platforms. This along with the generic interface means that you can directly log in to most online live video providers and stream straight to your audience, without needing to connect via a PC or control room. Though this unit doesn’t offer multi-modem cellular bonding, the three connection options should provide enough of a choice for most users. A second feed can even be sent to an iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad for live monitoring. In addition to the HDMI there is a separate mic or line input and a headphone socket for monitoring.  The device is small and light enough to sit on top of a DSLR and includes a rechargeable battery too, for up to 90mins recording. The VidiU is expected to retail for $699 on its release (shipping dates to be confirmed).
